A box with copies of our latest book, Secret Bangkok, has just been delivered to Mark’s folks – and I’m so looking forward to holding that book in my hands when I get to the UK in July.
Someone asked a while back what work I’m most proud of and I have to admit, it’s Secret Bangkok. Not because the writing is particularly special, but because Mark and I worked so hard and delved so deep into history books and academic journals, and we scoured the city’s alleys and neighbourhoods to uncover some astounding places to go and things to see in the city that, before the pandemic, was the most-visited in the world.
I’m also exceptionally proud of the fact that the book celebrates many of the women who’ve had an impact on the city’s history. If you’ve been to Bangkok you’ll know that there are so many statues of kings and princes and ministers, but the city’s influential women are rarely seen. We’ve highlighted them in Secret Bangkok, and you’ll get to read about the queen who loved cars, a temple that honours female monks, the princess who oversaw the palace’s finances, the prostitutes who built a temple, and the woman who freed a captured army. There are others in the book, too – and their stories are exceptional.
What we ended up creating is a book that is not only a guide to the secret spots of the city, but it’s also a super-interesting read that will bring a greater sense of connection and understanding to anyone who’s fascinated by Thailand.
Secret Bangkok (Jonglez, 2022) will be available from July, and you can buy it in advance on Amazon:
